If you’re starting to look for a wedding photographer, you’ve probably come across a whole mix of wedding photography packages. Maybe you’re wondering, What on earth does any of this mean?! What do these actually include? How many hours do we need? What’s the difference between one package and the next?
It’s a lot to take in! And the truth is, you’re probably even more baffled as every photographer does things a little differently. That’s why I’ve pulled together a few things I always talk through with my couples, to help you work out what you actually need. But also so you can feel good about the decision you’re making.
When you enquire with me, I’ll always explain exactly what’s included, but it’s good to know that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach across the wedding industry.
For example, one photographer’s “full day” might mean 6 hours. For someone else, it could mean 12. Some include sneak peeks, a second shooter, travel, or an engagement shoot. Others keep things simple and let you add extras if you want them.
Before you book anyone, make sure you ask them what’s covered. Questions could include;
🌿How many hours of coverage are included?
🌿 What is the estimated number of images you’ll receive?
🌿 How will you receive your gallery?
🌿 Will you have the option to add on albums or prints later?
If something’s not mentioned, just ask. You deserve to know exactly what you’re getting.
It can be really tempting to go for “full day” coverage just because it sounds like the safest bet. Or on the flip side, you could simply be looking at the price and letting that make your decision. But the question I always ask is: Which moments actually matter most to you?
Some couples want the whole story, from morning prep with your closest people, all the way through to dance floor antics. Others are much happier keeping things short and sweet, maybe just from the ceremony through to a few relaxed portraits and mingling with guests.
There is no right or wrong here, only what feels right for your wedding day. Your wedding photography package should feel like it fits perfectly with your day.
And if you’re not sure what you’ll want yet, trust me that is totally normal, but we can figure that out together.
A lot of couples assume a printed album or a box of photos is automatically included but that’s not always the case. Some photographers include them in every package, while others (like me!) keep your initial costs lower and give you the option to add them on later if and when it feels right.
There’s no right way to do it. Some people love having something tangible to hold, flick through, and show their families. Others are perfectly happy with digital galleries they can share and save straight away.
What matters is knowing what’s included up front, so you’re not left guessing later.
If albums and prints are important to you, ask whether they’re part of the package or something you can add on after the wedding, once you’ve had time to choose your favourites.
Adding a second photographer can be a great option, but it’s not essential for every wedding.
If you’re getting ready in different locations, have a big guest list, or want lots of candid shots from different angles, a second shooter can really help capture more of the day and in some cases is essential. But for smaller or more intimate weddings, one photographer (hi, me!) is often more than enough.
It really depends on your plans, your priorities, and how much coverage you want.
When we chat through your wedding, I’ll always let you know whether I think a second shooter would add value or if you’re totally covered with just me.
And if you do decide to add one, there’s nothing extra you need to organise. Just let your photographer know, and they’ll arrange everything, including bringing someone they trust to work alongside them on the day.
It’s easy to get caught up in comparing what’s included in wedding photography packages, but honestly? The most important part of choosing a wedding photographer is finding someone you actually connect with.
You’re going to spend a lot of time with this person on the day. You want to feel comfortable, understood, and like you can truly be yourselves in front of the camera.
The right photographer will take the time to guide you through what you need (and what you don’t). They’ll help you choose a package that fits your day, not try to sell you the biggest one just because.
So yes, look at the packages. But also trust your gut. If you feel relaxed chatting with them and love the way they see people and moments… you’re probably onto a good thing!
If none of a photographer’s packages feel like quite the right fit, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask. Most of us are more than happy to adapt things where needed. It’s just tricky to list every possible wedding scenario on a website or pricing guide.
Whether you’re planning something a bit different, need shorter coverage, or aren’t sure what to include yet, a good photographer will work with you to create something that feels like a natural fit for your day.
And if that sounds like the kind of approach you’re after, I’d love to chat.
