If even reading the word “headshot” makes you picture stiff suits, blue-grey backgrounds, and the awkward school photo smile… you are not alone. I’ve lost count of how many small business owners reach out to me thinking, “I need a headshot,” but what they’re describing is something much more meaningful. Something that shows their personality, their purpose, and the passion at the heart of their business.

The truth is, not everyone needs a traditional corporate-style headshot. And for many of the amazing, creative women I work with, a lifestyle or branding portrait is a much better fit.
So if you’ve been puzzling over the headshot vs. portrait debate, let’s unpack the differences – and help you figure out what actually represents you best.

When most people say “headshot,” what they think they need is a shot for their LinkedIn. But for a lot of my clients – especially small business owners, women in wellness, creatives, and boutique brands – what they really want is to be seen. Fully and honestly. In a way that helps their customers understand who they are and what they’re all about.
Because let’s face it… if you’re a yoga teacher, a florist, an author, or a designer in Sussex, a formal corporate headshot taken against a blank wall just isn’t going to cut it.
What you’re after is something more personal. More aligned with your brand. And maybe even something a little bit fun.

Let’s break it down with a few simple truths I share on pretty much every call I have with a new branding or portrait client.
If you genuinely work in a corporate setting and need a clean, polished headshot for applications, press features, or networking platforms like LinkedIn – opting for a classic headshot works just fine.
🌿 Typically indoors, often studio-based
🌿 Neutral background and clothing
🌿 A more formal look – think “professional and tidy”
There’s nothing wrong with that. It just depends on your needs.
But chances are, if you’re reading this, you probably want something more personal.
Creative portraits (what I’d call lifestyle branding photography) let your true personality shine. They’re not about appearing corporate – they’re about helping people connect with who you are. Perfect if:
🌿 You run your own business or freelance
🌿 Want photos for your website and social media
🌿 You’re a creative or wellness-based brand
🌿 You want to show your values, not just your face
We can capture your natural laugh, not your stiff “camera smile.” We can include the space you work in, what you do behind the scenes, the colours you love, even your pets or the places that inspire you.
Basically: it’s about realness, not perfection.
Here’s a little secret: no one really loves being in front of the camera. I totally get the feeling (honestly, same). That awkward, what-do-I-do-with-my-hands spiral is real.
But part of my job is helping you feel relaxed, guiding you in a super gentle way, and making the session feel more like catching up with a friend. That’s where the best photos come from – not from posing perfectly, but being present and comfortable with someone who “gets” you.
That’s why I always say: choose the feel of the shoot you want, and we’ll make sure the images align with that.
Here’s a quick tip I often share:
🌿 If you want one tidy, professional head-and-shoulders image for corporate use, a traditional headshot might be enough.
🌿 If you’re planning a website or want content for Instagram, blog posts, press features, or newsletters, creative portraits or lifestyle branding photos will serve you so much better.
Chances are, if your business isn’t following “traditional rules,” your photos shouldn’t either.

Here’s what I know for sure from working with dozens of lovely, creative women in Sussex and beyond: You are your brand. People want to work with you – the real you – not a version of you you feel like you “should” present.
And your photos can help them connect with you before they’ve even heard you speak or read your words.
Honestly, the women I photograph are rarely chasing perfection. They’re trying to build something they believe in. And photography that reflects that energy – that truth – is worth so much more than a basic head-and-shoulders shot.
