Hello you! 👋 If you’ve been wondering whether a West Wittering Beach family photoshoot is actually right for your family … especially with little ones and bedtime routines to think about … you’re not alone.
It sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Golden light, sandy toes and happy chaos.
But it can also feel slightly daunting if you’re worrying about late evenings, wind and children who may or may not co-operate. 😅
So why don’t we talk honestly about what these sessions are really like, and whether it’s the right fit for your family.

To be perfectly honest, the light in those final moments of the day is just beautiful. Soft, flattering, warm without being harsh. West Wittering Beach gives us space, wide skies, dunes, sea air and room to move.
You may be thinking that West Witterings will be busy as it is the beach to go in West Sussex. But by the time we begin, as it is later in the day, everyone has had their day at the beach and are heading home. Which means the beach feels calmer and slower, and you don’t need to worry about who’s walking behind you in the background.
It feels peaceful. Like the day is winding down and you can just breathe.
I know this is the big one.
You’re picturing overtired tears at 7:43pm and questioning all your life choices. But I promise you, it is totally doable. Sometimes children are tired. Sometimes they’re hyper because it feels like an adventure. Sometimes they completely surprise you. In most family photoshoots, children go through all of the emotions.
They may arrive a bit shy, then get excited when they realise they are just going to be playing with their family. They may run around and not listen to you because the excitement is just abit too much. Then they may have a little slump and get all snuggly, have another surge of energy when we go by the water, and then they are tired again and it’s time to head home.
But guess what? This is totally normal.
If they want to run, we let them run. If they need a cuddle, we slow it down. If they’re feeling shy, we ease into it gently.
You don’t need perfectly behaved children. You just need to show up and trust that I’ll guide you through it.

Choosing the right month can make a big difference, especially when you’re factoring in bedtimes and energy levels.
There’s no “best” month, just the one that works best for your family.
Sessions usually start between 6:30pm–7pm, which feels manageable for most families. You still get beautiful golden light, and it’s such a lovely time of year to be back outside without it being too late.
This is what most people picture when they think “summer beach photos.” Long evenings, warm air, proper holiday energy.
But the sun sets the latest at this time of year, which means we’re often starting around 8pm.
These months are brilliant for slightly older children who can handle a later night (and might secretly love it). For toddlers or early sleepers, it can feel like a stretch.
Sunset shifts slightly earlier again, so sessions typically begin around 7pm. It still has that classic summer feel, just with a slightly more manageable start time, and it’s perfect for the school holidays when routines are slightly more relaxed.
Sunset becomes much earlier and sessions can start anywhere between 4pm–6pm, depending on the date. This is often ideal for younger children. The light is softer, the air feels calmer, and you’re not navigating overtired meltdowns quite as much.
This isn’t about ticking “family photos” off the list.
It’s about capturing this version of your family … at this age, in this season … before it shifts again (because it always does).
The way your child reaches for you without thinking.
The way they run ahead and then turn to check you’re watching.
The way you all laugh when the wind catches someone’s hair.
That’s what you’ll look back on.

If you’re reading this thinking, “This actually sounds like us…”. Let’s make it happen!
We’ll choose the month that works best for your family, embrace whatever energy your children bring, and create something that feels real and relaxed (with maybe a slightly later bedtime thrown in 😅).
If you’re local to West Sussex or the Chichester area and have been considering a West Wittering Beach family photoshoot, I’d absolutely love to hear from you.
Pop me a message, check availability, and we’ll start planning.
Love, Amy xx
Start times depend on the month. In April and May, sessions usually begin between 6:30pm–7pm. June and July are later (around 8pm), August is typically 7pm, and September and October can range from 4pm–6pm depending on sunset times.
It depends on your child. Some toddlers struggle with later evenings, while others treat it like an adventure. We can talk through your child’s routine and choose a month that feels manageable.
They don’t need to. These sessions are relaxed and child-led. Movement, cuddles, laughter and even shy moments all create beautiful, natural images.
Yes, absolutely! I photograph families across Sussex, including countryside and at-home sessions. I also travel further afield for sessions subject to travel fees.
West Wittering Beach is simply my preferred location for beach sessions as the space, light, and atmosphere there make it perfect for relaxed sunset photos.
I’ll guide you on this once you’re booked. Soft, neutral tones work beautifully with the natural colours of the beach, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable.
