Hey you! 👋
So, you’re engaged … first of all, congratulations! What an exciting, slightly overwhelming, totally wonderful time. There are a lot of decisions coming your way, but if there’s one I’d encourage you to put near the top of your list, it’s choosing your wedding photographer.
I know, I know – it’s easy to push it down while you’re busy hunting for the perfect venue or obsessing over table arrangements. But your photos are the one thing you’ll have long after the flowers have wilted and the cake has been eaten. So let’s make sure you get it right.
Here’s my honest guide to choosing a wedding photographer in Sussex – from a photographer who genuinely cares about getting you a result you’ll love.

Before anything else, look at their work. Not just a few highlight shots, but full galleries from real weddings. Anyone can have a beautiful portfolio of their best-ever images. What you want to know is: does their everyday work still make you feel something?
There are broadly two ends of the spectrum – highly posed and editorial (think magazine-style, very styled) and natural, documentary-style storytelling (think genuine moments, real emotion, the chaos and the connection). Most photographers sit somewhere in between, but it’s worth knowing where your heart is before you start comparing prices.
Personally, I shoot in a natural, relaxed, story-led way – blending in quietly, capturing the moments as they unfold rather than directing every shot. If you’re drawn to photos that feel real, rather than rehearsed, that’s a good sign we might be a great fit!
This one is SO underrated. You’re going to spend most of your wedding day with your photographer. They’ll be there when you’re getting your mascara on, when you’re doing that shaky-breathed walk down the aisle, when you’re stealing five minutes together at sunset.
You need to like them. More than that – you need to feel completely at ease around them.
Look for someone whose energy matches yours. Read their website copy, watch any videos they have, notice how they respond to your enquiry email. Do they feel warm? Calm? Fun? Genuine? Does it feel like a human conversation, or a transaction?
The photographers who make the best wedding photos are the ones who make their couples forget the camera is even there.

Here’s an honest one that might surprise you. Yes, it’s nice if your photographer has visited your venue before – it can help them personally. But a truly great photographer doesn’t need to have been there to do an incredible job.
A skilled photographer will arrive, walk the space, read the light, and find the most beautiful spots – often seeing things with completely fresh eyes. In fact, I’d argue that a photographer who hasn’t shot at your venue before can actually be more creative. They’re not falling back on the same angles, the same spots, the same shots they’ve captured for every couple before you. They’re discovering it with you.
What matters far more than venue familiarity is how adaptable, observant and creatively confident your photographer is. That’s what will give you photos that feel genuinely yours, rather than a repeat of someone else’s wedding at the same location.
Whether you’re getting married at Cissbury Barns, Southend Barns, Fitzleroi Barn, Two Woods Estate, Findon Place or somewhere completely off the beaten track – what matters most is finding someone whose work and personality feels right for you.
Star ratings are easy to fake. Genuine written reviews are much harder to manufacture, and they tell you so much more.
Look for reviews that go beyond “the photos were beautiful!” and speak to the experience – did they feel relaxed? Did the photographer handle tricky family dynamics with ease? Did they communicate well in the run-up? Did they capture things the couple didn’t even notice happening?
Those are the reviews that tell you what it’s actually like to work with someone.

Wedding photography packages can be confusing, and it’s easy to compare prices without really comparing like for like. Make sure you know:
How many hours of coverage you’re getting
Whether an engagement shoot is included (these are brilliant for getting comfortable in front of the camera before the big day!)
When you’ll receive your photos and in what format
Whether prints or albums are available
What happens if something unexpected comes up on the day
A good photographer will be completely transparent about all of this – no hidden extras, no vague terms.
Seriously – please don’t just book online without speaking to your photographer first. A quick video call can tell you so much. Do they listen? Are they excited about your day? Do you feel like they get you?
The right photographer should feel less like a supplier and more like someone you’d genuinely want at your wedding. Booking someone you’ve only ever exchanged emails with is a bit like inviting a stranger – meet them first (even virtually)!

After all the research, the gallery scrolling, the review reading, and the video calls – trust how you feel. If someone’s work makes your heart do a little skip, and chatting to them feels easy and warm, that’s not something to overthink.
Your wedding photos will hang on your walls for decades. They’ll be the thing your kids and grandkids flip through one day. Choose someone whose work moves you, and whose presence on the day will feel like a gift rather than a stress.
